Pilgrimage into the Archetype of Future

What does it mean to create a future when our lives have never been ours alone?
This question travelled through Kumano, Koyasan and Kyoto in December 2024. It was carried by people making art, building organisations, studying, and finding their way. As the days unfolded, it reached backwards as well as forwards: towards those who had come before, the life of the land, and what could happen between people who had only just met.

Kumano熊野
A different pace
A conch sounded before the great rock at Akakura. At Ogumotori-goe, the path towards Nachi was harder than some had expected. People found their own pace and helped one another along. At Seigantoji, prayers written on wooden sticks were given to the fire.
The inquiry into the future had come onto a mountain path, into a body that could grow tired, and into practices kept alive long before this gathering. The questions people brought were still there. Now they were being carried in the company of others.
A few words from a prayer book given by a Kumano yamabushi would surface again when people met afterwards: to receive this day, and do what could be done today. They held a question that travelled beyond the mountains. How do we become available to what a moment asks of us?

Koyasan高野山
The circle keeps changing
At Koyasan, the circle widened. People arriving from Kumano met younger people joining on the mountain. The different journeys began to enter the same conversation.
At first, there could be an eagerness to meet everyone, to hear what each person knew, to make the most of the time. Then another rhythm became possible. Small circles formed, dissolved, and formed elsewhere. One participant remembered them as bubbles appearing and disappearing. The mandala they had heard about began to seem alive in the movement of the gathering itself.
There was learning in both directions. The younger people were meeting lives of long practice; the older guests were encountering questions that could make their own experience newly visible. A circle could hold an unfinished sentence. It could also hold the silence before anyone knew what to say.
Koyasan高野山
What we had not come to find

Not every expectation was met in the way imagined. An artist who listened to an inner voice each morning had hoped the dialogue would deepen at Koyasan. After rising around five, the artist went to an empty hall. The familiar voice did not come. Listening more closely, the artist felt it was sleeping, as if at home. Attention gradually turned towards accompanying other people on their journeys.
In that change of attention lay a question for the work to which people would return. Making art, creating a place for others, using the resources entrusted to us: what would guide these acts? Whose life, beyond our own, could they make room for? The question was becoming as close as the person beside us.
Such moments could be clear in the body and difficult to explain. Others were still unsure what, if anything, had changed. There was no single experience through which everyone had to pass.
Kyoto京都
The company behind us先に生きた人と、ともにつくる
The journey continued in Kyoto, with more people joining its conversations. Making something new was coming into relation with all that had made a life possible.
For the artist, listening across languages changed the feeling of stepping into the future alone. The predecessors and ancestors behind that step could now be felt. A new work could begin from a long history of support, including support its maker had never known. What appeared to be a beginning was also a continuation.
In the circle, another question persisted: could we move beyond exchanging what we already knew, and create together while carrying our differences? On the final day, words from the circle became a drawing made together, something people might return to at home. A question about the gathering had already become a small act within it.

After the journey
Among unfinished things
On 22 December, people met again online. There were words for peace and possibility, and there were words for not knowing. There was a wish to begin new work, still unreconciled with the tasks already waiting at home. Someone had begun learning English and bought equipment for fermenting food. Small experiments were finding their way into ordinary days.
Ideas for meeting again were equally various: a walk to a shrine, food and conversation, dancing, poems, listening to someone and drawing what they were trying to say. None needed to contain the whole experience.
The pilgrimage had begun with a question about the forms through which a future might become possible. It continued in the care taken with what had been received: time for another person, trust in a piece of work, a question kept alive between friends. The next form was still being found.
