Pilgrimage across Worlds
Kumano · Koyasan

On the last evening in Koyasan, the room stayed open late. Anyone carrying something they wished to offer—a few words, an expression taking shape, something they could not yet name—could bring it towards the following morning’s circle. There was room to speak with someone first. There was also room simply to listen.
The pilgrimage had come through Kumano to Koyasan, bringing together people from different lands, generations and ways of life. Each had arrived with a history, a question, something still unresolved. Over the days, what they had come to receive and what they were able to give began to change.

The pace of another lifeともに歩く、その歩幅
Along the long Kumano walk, the group stretched into different paces. At Jizō-jaya, shiruko was prepared for walkers arriving at different times. Those serving the warm, sweet soup stayed to receive the last. The day held both the effort of walking and the care that made each person’s way possible.
That evening, another part of the path became visible in the circle. One pilgrim had walked near the front, found solitude among the trees and finished first. As others spoke of needing help and holding one another up, she recognised an intimacy she had hurried past. Attention turned from what she might gain from the day towards what she could give, release or leave behind. The same path had held experiences that only became known when they were shared.
Some of those helping to hold the journey had first walked Kumano together in November. Trust had grown through those days. It was now something they could draw upon, even when they could not know in advance what the gathering would ask of them.

Koyasan · Coming together
A life beside another lifeひとつの生の、すぐそばに
In Koyasan, those arriving from Kumano met others beginning their pilgrimage here. Temple life continued around the gathering: morning prayers, meals, walks through Okunoin. A circle in a room belonged within a much longer continuity of people making a place for prayer and receiving those who came.
The worlds people carried did not disappear when they sat together. A wish for a different society could sit beside uncertainty about one’s own next step. On the second morning, one participant realised that he had come looking for people with whom to live. Trust was still beginning; even so, he recognised companions. He could not listen to all that was here on his own.
After the gathering, someone who had known almost none of the others four days earlier was writing of love and awe: of having touched a small corner of their lives, and of being welcomed into them. Something had become possible between people who had only just met.
The circle
What could be offered
The last circle made room for what people had received to find an expression of its own. An offering could still be unfinished. There was no need to wait until everything had been understood before allowing another person to meet it.
Afterwards, the circle was remembered as a great goma fire: each person bringing something precious, allowing it to enter a life larger than their own. Beneath the room and its circle lay the land, holding memories that reached far beyond those present. Offering joined the intimate scale of a human life to that longer span.
The way the gathering was held was changing too. People who had once been received now helped others arrive. Those accustomed to standing at the centre practised leaving room. Someone began with the thought of arranging cushions, making tea and passing a microphone, and found himself involved from the earliest preparations to the final days. The question of service opened through doing it.

After the mountain
The journey enters the day道が、日々に入ってくる
There were things people wanted to remember before words made them too settled: shooting stars, rain falling in sunlight, tears, laughter, embraces that were difficult to end. On the morning after the gathering, a rainbow was photographed and sent back to the others. Departures continued, each person carrying a different part of what had happened.
A week later, one of the volunteers sat alone in a garden under a sky full of stars. In the silence around the winter solstice, he felt he was continuing KUNI by himself, and at the same time with everyone. The gathering had ended; the company had not entirely gone.
For another, a boundary between the sacred path and ordinary life had begun to fall away. Work, responsibilities and relationships could themselves become places of practice. The question was becoming how to give full attention to the life already here—to receive what happened, and offer oneself into it.
The path continued in different places. What had passed between people could not all be named, or carried home in the same form. It could be listened for again in a conversation, in work, in the way another person was welcomed. There was still much to learn about living what had been received.
